Is the .05 charge for bags that the Governor of New York implemented in Suffolk County really helping the environment? I doubt it, but people do try to now minimize how many bags they purchase or remember their reusable bags when they can. Earlier this year, Governor Cuomo created a law that would hit Suffolk County, Long Island residents where it hurt, charging customers for not being eco-friendly. Yes, when people use the reusable bags it does help with the environment, but when a person forgets bags and has to pay .05 for each bag that is not really helping the situation. This just puts the guilt on the consumer for not making eco-friendly decisions rather than the government.

This has been popping up all over the country. Government wants to make eco-friendly solutions but not eliminate the problem. This is not helping the environment at all but allowing to just change the hands of responsibility. If stores only sold reusable bags and not created this .05 rule then more people would be inclined to bring their reusable bag because paying $1 at stores like TJMaxx would hurt more then .05 in someone’s pocket. Also consumers know that the .05 bags are there so even if they are going to the store only to pick up a few items, it does not register in that person’s mind to bring their reusable bag and they end up paying the .10 for two bags.
